This species is native to India and southeast Asia.

Huperzine A is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alkaloid compound found in the firmoss Huperzia serrata and in varying quantities in other Huperzia species, including H. elmeri, H. carinat, and H. aqualupian. Huperzine A has been investigated as a treatment for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.
Research on huperzine A originated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Mayo Clinic, Jacsoville, Florida. Preclinical studies of this compound suggested blood-brain barrier penetration and good tolerability and the same mechanism of action as the original Chinese extract. Additional formulations of huperzine A exist, as well.
